“The following advice has no basis other than my own meandering experience… I will dispense this advice, now” - Baz Luhrmann
Culture Is King. Culture is ‘The way we do things around here’. We have a culture in our gym of progression, support and community. Everyone in our gym wants the best for everyone else; that culture is born from how much we care for our members.
Coaching is Key. The art of coaching is beautiful. Coaching is in every aspect of life. It’s the process of helping someone get from A-B. I LOVE COACHING!
Everyone Needs A Coach. As a coach… you need a coach. I have business mentors. I have my Dad who coaches me through life. My Uncle Rich who coaches me in Fitness. A coach without a coach is a hypocrite.
Be a Go-Giver. From first contact, we provide as much free help and support as possible. Free content on my website, instagram, facebook, YouTube, personalised advice and even a Free 7 Day Trial at our gym. Give First and give freely.
Empty The Bin. I remember once being told that if the bin in your gym is overflowing, you can’t possibly have a good business. Cutting corners and being lazy will show through in other ways.
Don’t Get Too Excited Over A Win. A loss is waiting right around the corner.
Don’t Get Too Upset Over A Loss. A win is waiting right around the corner.
Seek To Understand. Empathy is one of the greatest qualities a coach can have. Actively seek to understand people. Once you have a deep understanding its easier to provide helpful coaching.
You Don’t Need To Appear Like You Have The Answers. Nobody likes a know it all. I aim to always ask at least 1 question before trying to provide a solution to someones problem.
Business, Fitness, Relationships & Life Are All The Same Thing. How you approach any 1 of these factors is how you approach them all. The focal point is YOU.
Success Starts With Your Character. If you have bad character, you won’t make it. Maintain qualities such as, Integrity, Hard Work, Compassion, Empathy, Humility.
Self Development is Key. Character can be worked on and improved, which highlights the importance of self development. Listen to podcasts, read, have conversations, go on courses, go to seminars… Learn and Grow.
Internal Environment impacts your External Environment. You can’t control the external environment. But if you master your internal environment, you’ll find a way to succeed through any external factors.
Over Deliver on Service. We consistently deliver a high standard of service. When a client enters the gym. Smile. Shake Hands. Use their name. Ask how they are. Give them a water bottle. Do this every time.
Over Deliver on Customer Care. We have real conversations with all of our members. Providing extra support outside of the gym, whether it’s a phone call, a card or remembering an occasion. Actually taking an interest in their lives is very important.
Make Sure You Train. Training is a non-negotiable! A strong body goes hand in hand with a strong mind.
Core Offering of the Highest Quality. We have a clear system at our gym. It’s carefully crafted to cater to anybody who walks through the door on any given day. We drill our craft and make sure that our coaching is of the highest standard. Without a solid core offering, you’re dead in the water.
Stay above board. Having an official setup for your business is important. We have kept everything above board, this saved our business. Plus, it’s easier for your members to trust.
Genuinely Care. People will spot a lack of genuineness a mile away. If you don’t care about the people you serve, you will not last.
Connect With Your Community. Our next door neighbours have been pivotal in our success. We help them and they help us. Local business’ are a lifeline.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. People are willing to help, but they can’t help unless they know it’s needed. Don’t be afraid to ask.
Have a good network. Expand your network to have quality people accessible to help you on your journey.
Appreciate your support system. As a business owner it’s easy to fall into the trap of feeling all the responsibility. Don’t let that mutate into a lack of appreciation for the people in your corner. Make sure they feel appreciated, you need them.
Work Life Balance is an eternal struggle. I don’t know if discovering a work / life balance is possible. But I am going to give it my best shot. If any gym owner has worked this out, let me know how.
Make Time For Love. Love makes everything better. Find someone to love who loves you too.
You have to put in the reps. Just like making progress in the gym. There is no substitute to doing the reps. It’s the same in business. You have to put the daily repetitions in to see any growth.
Delegate. I have a big problem with delegation. Not being willing to delegate has caused me a lot of headaches.
Don’t Get Complacent. You can lose revenue in a heartbeat, for any reason. Make sure that you are always investing in future income.
Over-Working Can Make You Sick. Setting up the gym in 2019 made me unwell. If you push yourself too hard for too long, something will give eventually. Manage yourself as best you can.
Celebrate. Stop to smell the roses. Life is a rollercoaster. Make sure you enjoy the ride. I’m off to open some champagne!
