14.3% of people in the UK are now gym members. (for 2016, according to leisuredb.com)
That is over 9 million people.
This means that just over 85% of the UK are not gym members! But WHY?
5 Reasons you might HATE the gym
1. Intimidation. For some, the thought of walking into a room full of complicated machinery, loud music and heavy weights is their worst nightmare and thats not even mentioning the people in these facilities!
2. Gym people. We all know the type: Muscle Vest, veins popping, biceps the size of basketballs or Crop top, Gym Shark leggings and toned to the max. I’m not here to insult anyone and generally you’ll find that these are the nicest people you’ll meet in the gym, however their appearance can be intimidating!
3. Not knowing what to do. There is such an abundance of equipment, and so many different types of exercises, but not knowing how to execute these movements will deter many. Which brings us onto our next point…
4. Fear of embarrassment. Some prospective clients that I have interviewed have been hesitant to attend a gym for fear of people watching them or even laughing. This is understandable and many people feel this way. This fear is probably cemented by the fact that you have likely watched hundreds of gym fail videos on Youtube, Instagram and Vine or even ‘You’ve Been Framed’.
5. It’s too hard. The thought of getting sweaty, plodding away on a treadmill for hours, feeling tired and sore and even just going in the first place is just too much for some. You may think that the only way to get results is to destroy yourself in the gym making a flight of stairs look like Mount Everest the next day. Simply put, the gym is too hard.
All of the above reasons are totally valid and I'm sure everyone can relate in some way, even those who love the gym.
